The present chapel was established by a Trust Deed as a place for public religious worship by Particular or Calvinistic Baptists. The minister or pastor has therefore to be of that persuasion. However it is permissible to receive those of other denominations provided that they profess repentance towards God and faith in and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Name of the Church
The Church shall be known as:
CARLISLE BAPTIST CHURCH (AGLIONBY STREET)
BASIS OF FAITH
We accept the revelation of the triune God given in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and confess the historic faith of the Gospel therein set forth, and here assert doctrines which we regard as crucial to the understanding of the Faith and which should issue in mutual love, practical Christian service and evangelistic concern.
1. The sovereignty and grace of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in creation, providence, revelation, redemption and final judgment. Scriptures: Is. 45; Gen. 1:1; Acts 17:30-31; 1 Cor. 1:30; Eph. 1:11- 12; 2 Tim. 4:1; Heb 1:1-3.
2 The Divine inspiration of Holy Scripture and its consequent entire trust-worthiness and supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. Scriptures: 2 Tim. 3:16; Jer. 1:9-10; 36:4, 27-28; Hab. 2:2; Luke 25:25- 27; John 10:35; Gal. 1:11-12; Heb. 1:1.
3. The universal sinfulness and guilt of fallen man, making him subject to God's wrath and condemnation. Scriptures: Rom. 3:23; Ps. 51:5; Is. 53:6; Rom.1:18; 3:9-20; 5:18; Ez. 18:4.
4. The substitutionary sacrifice of the incarnate Son of God as the sole and all sufficient ground of redemption from the guilt and power of sin and from its eternal consequences. Scriptures: Eph. 1:7; Mark 10:45; John 3:16; Romans 3:24-25; 8:1-4; 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18.
5. The justification of the sinner solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ crucified and risen from the dead. Scriptures: Rom.3:21-31; Rom. 4:25; Eph. 2:4-9.
6. The illuminating, regenerating, indwelling and sanctifying work of God the Holy Spirit.
Scriptures: John 16:7-15; John 3:5; Romans 8:9-11; 1 Cor. 6:19; 2 Thess. 2:13; Titus 3:5-7.
7. The priesthood of all believers who form the universal Church, the body of which Christ is the head and which is committed by His command to the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world.
Scriptures: 1 Pet.2:4,5,9,10; Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8; 1 Cor. 12:12-13, 27; Eph. 1:22-23; Rev. 1:6.
8. The expectation of the personal, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ, in power and glory.
